Stores functions as a liaison between the researcher and the Office of Environmental Health & Safety and the Purchasing Department minimizing the bureaucracy and paperwork a researcher may otherwise encounter in obtaining necessary supplies. The unique feature of Medical Center Stores which sets it apart from many other science supply redistribution operations is the scientific background of its professional level staff. Stores provides a rapid and knowledgeable alternative to the traditional purchasing process by stocking commonly used research supplies which can be acquired by the customer immediately and by pre-bidding other research supplies which can be ordered as need arises without encountering delays due to the bid process.

Staffing: Stores is staffed by a Manager and three Assistant Managers who have minimum requirements of a Bachelor's degree in a scientific area and basic research experience. These requirements were incorporated into the

position descriptions to ensure that the professional level staff is familiar with the products they are handling, and more importantly are familiar with the problems and concerns of the researchers. Researchers can count on the fact that the Stores' staff will understand the need for a specific purity level of a particular compound and will be able to discern subtle differences between brands to ensure the researchers get the exact product that is needed.

In addition, the Stores staff remains current on new products and developments and educates the research community about new products which can either save research time or money. Also, often the professional level Stores staff will use their expertise to work independently at the request of a department chairman to stock and set up a new lab with basic research equipment and supplies for incoming faculty. This service allows new faculty to begin research almost immediately upon arrival and lessens the impact of orientation into the state purchasing system. This technical knowledge and research experience of the professional staff is supported by other staff members performing stock clerk and clerical duties to ensure paperwork flows smoothly, orders are processed promptly, and audit trails are maintained.

Affiliations: Medical Center Stores participates as a member of the professional organization of the National Association of Scientific Materials Managers. This organization helps Stores staff remain current with new trends on scientific materials, safety procedures, OSHA standards, and other related professional concerns. Scope of Services: Medical Center Stores serves approximately 880 customers each month located at the Health Sciences Center, at affiliated institutions such as Oschner Hospital, Tulane Medical Center, University of New Orleans and the main LSU campus in Baton Rouge. Stores processes approximately 50 orders each day.
